Tesla FSD Italy: TAD approval status

Tesla Assisted Driving, TAD (FSD), used to be called FSD Supervised. Italy have not approved it yet. On 29 October 2026, Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini said Italy supports a swift EU approval. Tesla lodged formal documents with the ministry in July 2026.

Supportive of EU Approval

Transport Minister Matteo Salvini backs a swift EU approval (29 Oct 2026). Tesla's file is under ministry review (Jul 2026). Still no national approval.

Regulator: Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT)

Last change: 29 October 2026

What this means for owners: Nothing to switch on yet. Italy's support counts at the EU vote, but it isn't an approval for Italian cars.

Italy Tesla FSD: is TAD available right now?

No.

In July 2026, Gaetano Servedio, a director general at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport, confirmed that Tesla had submitted formal documentation and that technical talks were underway.

That's a real national process. It still isn't a customer green light.

On 29 October 2026, Matteo Salvini, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, posted on X after a conversation with Elon Musk that Italy "supports a swift EU approval of Tesla Assisted Driving".

That's clear political support for the EU route. It isn't a national approval, and Italy haven't recognised the Dutch RDW type approval, so the tracker now says Supportive of EU Approval.

Who decides in Italy

The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport handle type approval. My regulators page lists div3.dgmot@mit.gov.it, with a PEC address for formal applications.

Italy sit inside the EU type-approval framework. They've chosen to review Tesla's filing rather than rush out a recognition letter.

Senator Carlo Calenda's parliamentary inquiry (Atto di Sindacato Ispettivo, 28 April 2026) pressed the government on timelines and the Dutch precedent. That inquiry is still part of the picture, alongside the July ministry review.

What changes for owners

Nothing for normal customer use.

The ministry review and the open inquiry are engagement. Neither is an FSD approval Italy have actually given.

Demo rides are listed for Italy on my demo rides page. A ride-along doesn't switch anything on in your own car.

You stay responsible for the car. TAD (FSD) is driver assistance.

How Italy could vote at the TCMV

Salvini's post of 29 October 2026 is the clearest signal yet. Italy back a swift EU approval, which makes them the second big state after Germany (6 October 2026) to say so publicly.

That matters for the vote maths, because a qualified majority needs 15 of 27 states and 65% of the EU's population, and Italy hold about 13% of it on Eurostat's 2026 figures.

It looks like Italy will vote yes if the Dutch request comes to a vote in its current form. Italy haven't published a formal TCMV position yet.

December 2026 is the earliest apparent opportunity for a vote, but none has been announced.
