Tesla FSD Sweden: TAD approval status

Tesla Assisted Driving, TAD (FSD), used to be called FSD Supervised. Owners in Sweden can't use it. Transportstyrelsen allow limited tests with trained test drivers on selected routes. That's the lot. A wider launch needs the EU decision first.

Public Testing

Public testing continues. Trafikverket recommend opposing EU-wide approval unless the speed offset is disabled.

Regulator: Transportstyrelsen (Swedish Transport Agency), with Trafikverket advising the EU committee

Last change: June 2026

What this means for owners: Nothing to switch on. Ordinary owners can't activate it, and Sweden have not recognised the Dutch approval.

Sweden Tesla FSD: is TAD available right now?

No.

Transportstyrelsen say these functions may only be used in dedicated test environments for now. Tesla have permission for limited tests, with trained test drivers, on selected routes.

That is not the same as you pressing the button.

Sweden have not recognised the Dutch provisional approval for consumer use. So the tracker says Public Testing. Testing only, for now.

Who decides in Sweden

Two agencies, two jobs. This is where people get confused.

Transportstyrelsen, the Swedish Transport Agency, are the vehicle approval authority. They sit in the EU process. My regulators page lists vag@transportstyrelsen.se as their type approval contact.

Trafikverket, the Swedish Transport Administration, run the state roads and advise on safety. They are the ones who wrote to the EU committee about the speed offset. That's why my EU tracker shows Trafikverket against Sweden.

Transportstyrelsen have also said they are working out how any future approval would apply to cars already on Swedish roads. The EU decision covers type approval of new vehicles.

So the FSD approval Sweden is waiting on comes from Brussels, not Stockholm.

Timeline

Date What happened Source
10 April 2026 The Dutch RDW grant a provisional EU type approval for TAD (FSD). Transportstyrelsen note it covers vehicles registered in the Netherlands. Transportstyrelsen
30 April 2026 Trafikverket write to the EU Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles. Their line: no approval unless the car can no longer exceed posted speed limits. The letter came out under freedom of information and was reported in June 2026. Reuters
May 2026 Transportstyrelsen say supervised testing is permitted on approved public roads, and that a broader launch depends on the EU process. Transportstyrelsen
31 August 2026 Minister Andreas Carlson answers a written question in the Riksdag. The government want a union wide approval of systems like this, provided safety can be guaranteed. Riksdagen
6 October 2026 The EU committee discuss the Dutch file again, still without a vote. December 2026 is the earliest a vote can happen. Reuters
8 October 2026 Tesla rename FSD (Supervised) to Tesla Assisted Driving in the UK and Europe. Not an FSD Tracker

What changes for owners

Nothing for now.

Swedish owners can't activate TAD (FSD). That includes owners whose cars already have the hardware. Transportstyrelsen have told them to wait for the EU process.

Transportstyrelsen have set out both outcomes. A no vote withdraws the national permissions. A yes vote makes a wider launch of Tesla Assisted Driving in Sweden possible, at the earliest in spring or summer 2027.

So Sweden are one of the countries where the TCMV vote really matters. Owners in Sweden have no national shortcut to fall back on.

No Tesla demo rides are listed for Sweden on my demo rides page.

How Sweden could vote at the TCMV

Sweden have not published a final position.

Trafikverket told the committee to vote no unless the deliberate speed offset goes. That was the letter of 30 April 2026, reported by Reuters in June. It's why Sweden get painted as the objector.

The government sound softer. On 31 August 2026 the minister called Trafikverket's assessment one input among many, and repeated the ambition: a union wide approval, provided safety can be guaranteed.

So I think Sweden are undecided rather than hostile. That's my read, not a published position.

My own take on the speed offset argument is in the Sweden article below.

December at the earliest. The committee are in no rush.

FAQ

Can I use Tesla TAD (FSD) in Sweden today?

No. Transportstyrelsen say the functions may only be used in dedicated test environments for now. Tesla have permission for limited tests with trained test drivers on selected routes. That is not a consumer release.

Does the Dutch approval count in Sweden?

No. Sweden have not recognised the RDW approval of 10 April 2026 for ordinary owners. Transportstyrelsen are waiting for the formal EU decision instead.

Why do people call Sweden an objector?

Trafikverket wrote to the EU Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles in April 2026. They recommended rejection unless the car can no longer exceed posted speed limits. Reuters reported the letter in June 2026.

When could Swedish owners get TAD (FSD)?

No date. Transportstyrelsen say a yes vote could make a wider launch possible at the earliest in spring or summer 2027. A no vote withdraws the national permissions.

What is the speed offset?

The setting that lets the car sit a margin above the posted limit. Trafikverket want it gone before an EU approval. Tesla can change it in software. You are responsible for the car either way.
